Position Overview

This person will have the opportunity to shape real estate development in economically challenged communities across Massachusetts. The Executive Vice President of Real Estate leads one of the most visible and influential divisions at the firm, overseeing real estate projects and programs. This EVP is responsible for sourcing and overseeing strategic development opportunities and for guiding a high-performing team to deliver results that matter. 

Reporting directly to the President & CEO and working closely with the Board, the EVP sets the vision and strategy for the real estate division – aligning strategic opportunities with statewide development priorities. This work will drive investment, unlock economic potential, and revitalize communities—from gateway cities to innovative districts. 

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Division Leadership: Define and drive the strategic direction of the Real Estate Division. Oversee budget planning, operational excellence, and team performance to maximize agency impact.
  • Transformative Project Oversight: Lead complex, high-value real estate projects across the Commonwealth—from underutilized assets to catalytic redevelopment sites— engaging a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder & Consultant Engagement: Work with top-tier consultants, planners, municipal leaders, military installations, and state agencies to develop and execute inclusive, future-focused plans.
  • High-Impact Development Strategy: Partner with best-in-class developers and contractors to deliver commercial, industrial, and mixed-use housing projects that support local economies and long-term growth.
  • Asset Stewardship: Manage strategic assets, including commercial real estate, infrastructure, and the firm’s 4,400-acre Devens site—overseeing planning, development, and long-term positioning.
  • Negotiation & Transactions: Lead complex real estate deals and funding agreements. Navigate regulatory, legal, and intergovernmental frameworks to ensure timely, compliant execution.
  • Strategic Alignment & Policy Leadership: Collaborate with the CEO and Board to align agency priorities with statewide economic development strategies. Shape policy frameworks that expand the impact of public real estate tools.
  • Partnership Development: Build and maintain high-level relationships with developers, public officials, investors, and civic leaders to foster alignment and shared success.
  • Market Intelligence: Stay ahead of market dynamics and emerging trends to keep MassDevelopment at the forefront of real estate innovation and policy. 

Qualifications

  • Visionary Real Estate Leadership: A proven ability to drive strategic real estate initiatives with measurable economic and community impact.
  • Mission-Driven Experience: 15+ years of experience using real estate as a tool to advance inclusive growth and public good.
  • Public-Private Expertise: Deep experience navigating complex development environments that span public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
  • Stakeholder Savvy: Strong relationship-building skills across sectors, with a track record of cultivating trust, alignment, and action.
  • Operational Excellence: Precision in structuring deals, managing budgets, and aligning teams toward results—without losing sight of the big picture.
